Pobi Bach is a Gilfach Goch based bakery, run by multi award winning Pastry Chef Lyse Evans, one of the original founders of Urban Markets and Events.

Aside from selling weekly at Urban Markets, Lyse also supplies local businesses with desserts and bakes, and creates the most beautiful wedding and birthday cakes!

Please tell us a bit about your business, how did you get started and what do you sell?

I have always loved baking since as far back as I can remember - as a young girl I loved to stand at the side of my nans, with my apron on, helping them bake. After leaving school I attended Coleg-Y-Cymoedd in Nantgarw, and quickly got into competition work - after two years at college I qualified as a Pastry Chef and went on to win multiple medals & awards.

I was lucky enough to gain work experience with William Curley Chocolatier in London, Master Patissier and UK Pastry Champion Florian Poirot, and the 5-star Grove Hotel in London.

In 2017, I travelled to Barcelona and gained experience at Pasteleria Takashi Ochiai - a Patisserie serving Japanese rice flour dumplings, gingerbread and matcha green tea-flavored cakes.

After returning home, I worked at a few local hotels including the Vale Resort and Celtic Manor - whilst also competing with the Welsh Culinary Team. When I was told I was being let go from my job in January 2020, I decided to follow my dreams and open my own bakery.

Pobi Bach was born and ready to launch in March 2020, just as the pandemic hit. I had bought all of my stock and was due to sign the lease on a property two days after we went in to lockdown. I went ahead and baked all the stock I had and donated it all to local emergency services and front line workers. We realised that, instead of renting, there was a perfectly good double garage at home which could be converted into a new home for my business.

After months of hard work, Pobi Bach Bakery finally opened its doors on the 8th of March 2021 - National Independent Women’s day. One year later Urban Markets and Events was born.
